Encounters

Things that find you in the Depths: a goblin with a sack of borrowed loot, and the monster that remembers the last time it killed you.

Pipsnizzle the Thief

Hearthold's payroll goblin, off the clock, in a black domino mask. Catch him before his portal opens.

  • Appears on about 1 eligible floor in 12 (less in Bramble Hollow); after 18 floors without him, his odds climb by 2% a floor, up to 30%.
  • Not until you've cleared 3 floors. He spawns at least 12 tiles from where you arrive and is spotted within 8 tiles.
  • Once spotted he runs, jukes every 1.2–2.2 s and opens his portal after 12 s (a 1 s channel: still killable).
  • Stuns, freezes, fear, roots and silences turn into slows; slows land ×1.3 harder (at most 80%) and shake 3 coins loose. He drops a coin trail as he runs.
  • His health is about 5 seconds of an on-level hero's damage (more for a party).
  • Catch him: 12 gold piles, 2–4 materials, a rare item for your class (30% epic, 5% legendary), 2 more items, maybe a potion, a scroll or a ledger page.

His Vault

5% of kills leave his portal open (more after 10 kills without, up to 15%). Inside: 10 chests, 2 rare chests and 20 coin piles. The exit takes you down a floor; unclaimed loot stays behind.

The Nemesis

The monster that killed you gets a name, an epithet and a crown. It gloats on your death screen, then comes looking for you.

  • Die to an elite, a champion or a wanderer and it becomes your nemesis; a plain foe only 35% of the time. Up to 3 at once.
  • Each time it kills you again it ranks up (to 5): Blooded, Twice-Blooded, Thrice-Blooded, Crowned, Tyrant-Touched. Elite affixes grow too, up to 5.
  • It comes back: 15% a floor in its own dungeon, 8% elsewhere in its act, 10% within 5 depths in the Descent, +3% per floor since you last met (at most 45%), never within 10 tiles of the stairs.
  • Vengeance: ×3 XP, a guaranteed epic, +10% legendary chance per rank and 9 gold piles. Its trophy goes in your Hall of Vengeance (up to 24).
  • In co-op a friend's nemesis can walk your floors; help them settle it.
